Democratic Sen. Gary Peters is not running for a third term, so the seat is open. It is the only open Democratic-held Senate seat this year in a state Donald Trump won in 2024. Republicans haven’t won a Senate race in Michigan since 1994.
Mike Rogers, a former congressman, is running again after losing the 2024 Senate race to Elissa Slotkin by about 19,000 votes. He was the only candidate on the Republican primary ballot and has Trump’s endorsement.
Abdul El-Sayed, a doctor and former Wayne County health director, won a bruising Democratic primary on August 4 with 48.5% of the vote. He narrowly beat Rep. Haley Stevens, even though groups backing her outspent his side on TV several times over. Mallory McMorrow dropped out in July and then endorsed him. If elected, he would be the first Muslim U.S. senator.
The race could help decide which party controls the Senate.
