The backstory

Jon Ossoff is the only Democratic senator up this year in a state Trump won in 2024, which made him Republicans’ top target.

Republicans had to sort themselves out first. Gov. Brian Kemp passed on running and backed former football coach Derek Dooley as an outsider. Trump endorsed Rep. Mike Collins days before their June runoff, and Collins won.

The race got personal fast. Collins calls Ossoff an out-of-touch elite who has “never had a real job.” Ossoff says Collins is only in Congress because his father held the seat before him, and blames Collins’ support for Trump’s tariffs for higher prices.

At their two October debates, Ossoff also pressed Collins to denounce his son-in-law, an online influencer who has posted antisemitic material. With Ossoff steadily ahead, Republicans have reportedly considered moving their money to states where they like their chances better, which would amount to giving up on beating Ossoff. Collins’ campaign denies it.

Early voting is underway. If no one tops 50% on November 3, the top two meet again in a December 1 runoff.
